Carla Diana

Carla Diana

Carla Diana enjoys living as close to the near future as possible. In her studio and at the award-winning product innovation firm Smart Design, she works on future-specting projects in areas such as domestic robots, mobile devices and sentient kitchen appliances, combining experience in industrial and interaction design to create solutions that bridge the gap between the physical and the digital. She is a big believer in continuous tinkering and 2011 she founded the Smart Interaction Lab, an initiative focused on design explorations in the form of hacking and hands-on experimentation around topics such as expressive objects, digital making, and presence and awareness. In 2010 she took her studio on the road as one of MAD Museum's Open Studio Artists in Residence where her creations were open for public viewing. This spring, Carla will launch SVA's first ever "Smart Objects" course as part of the newly founded Products of Design and Interaction Design programs.

Jared Ficklin

Jared Ficklin

- frog design

Jared Ficklin is a Senior Principal Design Technologist at frog, where he builds user experiences for clients, playing with interactions including touch and multi-touch, and applying physics to enhance the user experience. A passion for music and making things introduced him to the hobby of sound visualization, which has led him on occasion to play with fire. (As Flash on the Beach puts it, "Jared Ficklin’s sonic experiments stood out for their individuality, drama and casual disregard for health and safety.") Every March in Austin, Texas, Ficklin organizes the frog party, a collective social experiment for a few thousand people attending SXSW Interactive. It's a form of playful R&D for social technology. And he has spent 10 years helping fund, design and build quality free public skateparks for Austin as part of the Austin Public Skatepark Action Committee.
