Camera Obscura

This Camera Obscura is a walk-in camera showing the surrounding scenery in full color and detail.

The rooftop lens projects the scenery onto a circular screen in the darkened room.

500 years ago Leonardo daVinci described the camera obscura which led to the development of photography.

Chris de Monterey worked at San Francisco's camera obscura starting in 1979 and later replaced its bearings, timer and mirror. He designed and built one for the Los Angeles county fair's history of the cinema and maze-like camera obscuras for Burning Man until 2008. He helped to circulate a petition to put San Francisco's camera obscura on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
