Makers' and hackers' ethos and communities offer some compelling insight into educational reform that is surprisingly radical. Come hear about a few ways some people are trying to capitalize on these opportunities, and what they think are some easy first steps to get started on the job of changing education.
nublabs is a smart-up in Boston that is working to set up a FabLab and community laboratory space, funded by socially-conscious engineering work. We've brought a FabLab--a computer controlled router, laser cutter, mini-mill, vinyl cutter, and EE bench--to Maker Faire to show Makers what the Fablab can do, tell them about the work that we've done, and help them to use the tools to make something on the premises.
nublabs is a design collective aiming to create empowering technologies to solve social problems. We're working to set up an open, community workshop and lab space to use as a springboard for a variety of community-facing initiatives. We want to empower people. We want to approach social problems in a way that acknowledges their systemic roots by designing the technology or infrastructure to fix the underlying cause instead of treating the symptoms.
